Spanish Presidency organises Conference on Gender Equality in Sport

On 14 and 15 November, the Spanish Council Presidency hosted the Conference on Gender Equality in Madrid. Opened by Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli, the conference navigated the broad landscape of gender equality in sports, delving into critical facets such as gender-based violence, the current status of women in sport and their visibility. A dedicated session on women in leadership roles, featuring Annamarie Phelps, EOC GEDI Commission Chair, resonated strongly with the GAMES project, crafting practical steps to transform aspirations of breaking glass ceilings into tangible outcomes. The event concluded with two comprehensive panels analyzing policies, offering insightful perspectives on both the Ibero-American and European contexts. The conference emphasized the need for cultural change in advancing gender equality. Critical progress components include forging alliances and employing data-driven strategies. The consensus at the conference's end: concrete measures are essential, beyond mere rhetoric.
