Promoting active lifestyles: Key insights from Health at a Glance: Europe 2024

The Health at a Glance: Europe 2024 report, published on 18 November 2024 by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Commission, evaluates EU health systems and highlights strategies to address key challenges like workforce shortages and healthy longevity.

A key area of focus in the report is the role of sport and physical activity in promoting public health. Despite well-documented benefits, physical activity levels across the EU remain insufficient, with only 15% of adults and less than a quarter of children meeting recommended activity levels in 2022. This inactivity contributes significantly to non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and depression, as well as rising obesity rates.

Promoting increased participation in physical activity, particularly among vulnerable groups, is critical. Effective strategies include improving access to recreational facilities, embedding physical education in school curricula, and running awareness campaigns about the long-term health benefits of active lifestyles.
