European Parliament

With discussions around the Multiannual Financial Framework still ongoing, MEPs are pushing for an increase in budgets for programs such as Erasmus+ and EU4Health - the increase for latter of which Commission President von der Leyen has supported in her speech on the State of the European Union.

This week was also marked by the opening of a new plenary session in the Brussels Parliament, involving several debates and votes happening. On 16 September, debates by the Parties mainly concerned the State of the Union address (see above), particularly burning issues such as unemployment, healthy, environment, neighbouring countries and digitalisation. Some opining seemed to be shared predominantly, as for instance the welcoming of the new 55% emission reduction goal and the condemnation of Poland’s Rule of law breaches.  

European Commission

On 16 September, President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented her first State of the Union speech, assessing her first nine months in office and setting out the priorities of the Commission for the years ahead.

On 7 September, the Commission, trade unions, chambers of commerce as well as employers' organisations are renewing their cooperation for the integration of migrants into the labour market. In a joint statement, they emphasised the areas for future focus and the need for a multi-stakeholder approach, including civil society organisations and social partners.
