Green Light to harmonise rules on artificial intelligence in the European Union

On 21 May, the AI Act was approved by the Council of the European Union. Aiming to harmonize the rules on artificial intelligence across the European Union, the regulation adopts a risk-based approach to regulate AI, meaning the higher the risk posed by an AI system, the stricter the rules it must follow. Furthermore, the law puts the emphasis on transparency, trust, and accountability in AI, helping in this way to boost European innovation but also to ensure AI’s positive impact on society and economy. It is a milestone for the EU in addressing global technological challenges, being one of the worldwide pioneer institutions in regulating artificial intelligence. Last month, the International Olympic Committee launched the Olympic AI Agenda positioning itself as leader in managing the AI’s impact on sports and the Olympic Movement.
