On 27 November, the European Parliament voted to approve Ursula von der Leyen’s second College of Commissioners for the 2024–2029 term. The vote, held in Strasbourg, resulted in 370 MEPs voting in favour, 282 against, and 36 abstaining. On 28 November, the European Council formally appointed the Commission by written procedure. With these approvals, the new Commission is set to begin its mandate on 1 December 2024.
Key appointments include Glenn Micallef as Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport, whose portfolio includes strengthening the European Sport Model (ESM). Micallef emphasises inclusivity, solidarity, and public health, supported by initiatives such as Erasmus+ and the #BeActive campaign. Roxana Mînzatu, overseeing Erasmus+ as Executive Vice President for Quality Jobs, Social Rights, Education, Skills, and Preparedness, will work closely with Micallef to ensure sport remains a key enabler in achieving the Union’s objectives.
The EOC EU Office is ready for early collaboration with the new Commissioners shortly after their start on 1 December, providing the basis for a good relationship.
