European Commission proposes rules to improve ambient air quality

On 26 October, the European Commission proposed a set of rules regarding ambient air, groundwater pollutants as well as the treatment of urban wastewater. This represents an important step forward regarding  the European Green Deal's objective to achieve a pollution-free environment by 2050.

In accordance with World Health Organization guidelines, the proposed revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directives will define interim air quality standards for 2030, while setting the EU on a path to achieve zero air pollution by 2050.

The European Parliament and the Council will now consider the Commission’s proposals under the ordinary legislative procedure. Upon adoption, they will be carried out gradually, with specific targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050 so as to allow industry and authorities to adjust and invest accordingly.
