On 19 March, the EOC EU Office launched its new Lunch & Learn webinar series, providing sport organisations with a dedicated platform to engage in key EU policy discussions. This session focused on the revision of the EU Directive on Combating Child Sexual Abuse, an important file for sport clubs working closely with children. Representatives from the European Commission outlined the upcoming Directive’s expanded legal obligations, such as mandatory background checks for staff and volunteers having regular and direct contact with children, victim assistance measures, and prevention measures. National Olympic Committees from Croatia, Poland, Sweden, and Finland shared existing safeguarding policies, while the IOC mentioned the forthcoming European Regional Safeguarding Hub. This highlights the pivotal role of the SAFE HARBOUR project in equipping partner NOCs and Federations with the necessary tools and support network to implement a cohesive safeguarding framework in Europe. Discussions underscored the importance of breaking societal taboos around child sexual abuse and fostering collaboration between the sport and education sectors. With this first successful session, the EOC EU Office reaffirms its commitment to supporting sport organisations in strengthening safeguarding efforts.
