European Parliament adopts position on renewable energy and energy efficiency

Created on Friday, 16 Sep 2022 12:17:48

During the plenary session taking place this week, the European Parliament adopted several texts related to the Fit for 55 package
Adopting their position on the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive, MEPs asked to increase the total share of renewable energy used in the Union to 45% by 2030. The Parliament also established a position on the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive. As a result, Member States should make sure to downscale both their final and primary energy consumption by 2030. MEPs also called for Member States to introduce binding national contributions to help attain these objectives. Accordingly, the adoption of these new rules would have an impact on all types of institutions, including sports organizations.
The Parliament also approved a resolution regarding the New European Bauhaus (NEB) – the Commission’s initiative to incorporate the goals of the European Green Deal into the daily life of EU citizens through innovation, design, science (but also physical activity and sport). MEPs stressed the necessity of outlining concrete selection criteria for NEB projects and of setting up a stand-alone EU funding programme to support the initiative.
Finally, the EP adopted its position on two texts on deforestation and forest protection. Once implemented, the new legislation will require businesses to ensure that goods sold in the Union do not derive from degraded or deforested land.
All the aforementioned texts still need to undergo negotiations with the Council of the EU and the Commission to be  adopted.
