DRAFT REPORT ON VIDEOGAMES AND E-SPORTS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED IN CULT COMMITTEE

On 17 May,  the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) discussed the draft report on "E-sport and video games".

The Rapporteur, Ms Farreng (Renew, France), outlined the three key objectives for the aforementioned draft report: to move the sectors forward and to utilize cultural and economic potential of videogames, whilst overcoming the persistent stereotypes linked with the sector; to define how the EU can provide a better structure to the videogames sector and what contributions it can make, in particular to create an environment without barriers, cultivating innovation and competition in the European videogame industry; and to highlight and promote e-sports, recognizing its value in breaking down barriers and strengthening the European identity, considering it a powerful tool in giving a sense of belonging among young people.

Throughout the discussion, the MEPs of the CULT Committee gave their feedback on the draft report, addressing the need of e-sports in complying with European and human rights values, i.e, to highlight the importance of integrity in a competitive setting, to promote the values of inclusion and tolerance, and to create a fair and safe environment for everyone engaging in this sector.

The deadline for the proposal amendments ends on 30 May 2022, whilst the vote on the report by the CULT Committee is expected to take place on 29 September 2022.
